MOTIVATION AND ACTION

Even more important than the action itself is the reason for the action. The action is the end product of human conduct. The forces that cause the action excite the audience and make the action believable.

The newspaper headline that proclaims, SUICIDE, tells of an exciting action. It is compelling in and of itself, but the reader wants to know more. Why did the woman take her own life? How did it happen? What are the results of the action? The drama is the tale of the background of the climactic action stated in the headline. It traces in an exciting fashion the interplay of the forces that ultimately drove the woman to suicide. The headline above might stand as the final statement of many different plays.

In other words, the play is the story of the reasons for a climactic action. These reasons or forces are the springs of action and are called the motivation.

Every action has an underlying motivation. The motivation to act lies in the wishes, needs, desires of the human. When these wishes are opposed by other wishes, needs, and desires, when obstacles stand in the path of the normal resolution of the wish, a disequilibrium, resulting in conflict, occurs.

The reason or motivation behind the action is the factor that makes the action dramatic. In the first two instances, there is no conflict and, thus, little that is dramatic. In the third and fourth instances, conflict is involved, and the explanation will transfix the attention of the spectator.
