Summer Garden

Believe it or not, some plants love Houston in August. The intense heat, high humidity and usual lack of rainfall all contribute to an environment in which certain plants grow and perform admirably.
Of these heat-loving plants, I have chosen two because of their unique flexibility. Both will grow well inside as well as outside, and they will thrive in containers or in mass landscape plantings.

Pink polka dot
Thriving in our heat and humidity but requiring protection from the direct sun of the afternoon, the pink polka dot is an outstanding performer. Also commonly known as “freckle face,” this colorful plant botanically known as Hypoestes sanguinolenta comes to the Houston area from Madagascar.
This interesting foliage plant can be used effectively in a variety of ways. Outside, planted in mass, the pink polka dot can add subtle splashes of color. If the plant receives at least three or four hours of morning sun, the green leaves will be covered with delicate but vibrant pink dots.
During the summer the colorful foliage is complemented by the presence of many small lavender flowers. The plant will grow well inside the home if it receives several hours of morning sunlight or is located near a window and therefore receives good indirect light.
This plant requires good drainage and excellent soil. For maximum growth, soil content should include large quantities of organic matter.
During the heat of August and September, watering must be accomplished regularly. Lack of sufficient water can cause the plants to wilt and also lose its lower leaves. Container plants will need watering every day as the temperatures remain in the 90s.
