Upgrading The Hard Drive In Your Play Station 3
By Marcus Creyton
Good news for Play Station 3 users: You do not have to settle for the puny 20 or 40 GB hard drive that comes with your PS3. The Play Station 3 allows you to take out and hot-swap your hard drive, and it’s not that hard to do. This means that you can upgrade your PS3 HDD to as much as a 200 GB hard drive, and maybe even more. You can keep more data from your games, files and other types of media on your Play Station 3 gaming console without making any major changes.
The Play Station 3 users’ manual actually tells you how to do it. There are three pages in the manual telling you step-by-step how to upgrade your hard drive, and it also tells you that you will not void your warrantee, unless the new hard drive causes damage to the console somehow, which isn’t likely. However, it warns that if you have to take the console in to get fixed, you should put the old hard drive back in.
All you need to do it is a couple of screwdrivers and the right kind of hard drive to put in. The PS3 will take any 2.5 mm SATA hard drive. Those who have upgraded already warn that it will not take the regular IDE Notebook hard drive, it needs to be a 2.5 SATA. The PS3 has a 5,400 RPM hard drive, so that speed will work best, although other speeds have been successfully used.
The procedure only takes about two minutes to do, and is so simple that anything with opposable thumbs could get the job done. (It is not recommended that PS3 owners put this to the test; for best results, it should be done by a human).
You simply open a small plastic flap on the back of the machine. There will be one screw to open the flap, and then four screws inside that will release the drive cage. Take out the old one and put in the new, and you’ll be ready to go. You still might want to have a look at the manual before you start tinkering. When you turn the console back on, it will already recognize the new drive and ask you if you want to format it. Keep in mind that formatting your new hard drive will erase any of your saved games that are on there.
Upgrading the hard drive in your PS3 won’t make it play any faster or better, but it will give your machine a lot more storage capacity. Some PS3 owners have managed to increase their storage capacity to as much as 200 GB, and others are always to push that capacity higher.
The capability to upgrade your PS3 is a great feature of the system. You can save money by getting the 20 GB unit and then pushing it up. It’s an easy job, but refer to your users’ manual first to make sure you’re on the right track.
