How to make your trip more enjoyable?

Plug it.
Cheap and readily available, earplugs mean you don’t have to put up with crying babies, loud passengers or startling pilot announcements, leaving you to catch 40 winks or read in peace.

What’s that smell?
If you get stuck next to a fellow traveller with less than pleasant body odour on a long-haul flight, save yourself by dabbing a little menthol lip balm under your nostrils.

Bring your own stuff.
If you know you won’t be able to sleep on long-haul flights without a personal effect – your own blanket, say bring it with you. That way, you won’t be deprived of a restful flight if the airline doesn’t provide the same.

Cover your laptop.
If you must work or play solitaire mid-air, close the cover whenever any form of liquid approaches. Many a computer has been ruined by accidents, turbulence and clumsy flight attendants in-flight!

Tips on buying a cell phone

If you want to use your cell phone to view videos or to store and view pictures you shot using your mobile’s camera, go for a handset that offers 65,000 colours or above (the higher, the better the quality and clarity) and it should also have a resolution of 640×480 pixels.

If polyphonic ringtones are important to you, opt for models that offer nothing less than 16 polyphonic tones for reasonable sound qualiiy. This means it has the sounds of 16 instruments, which can be played together in the ringtone.

Look for a phone with a Microbrowser feature. This lets you surf the wireless Web. If your phone features a WAP (Wireless Access Protocol) browser, you can use it to view websites that allow this mobile-viewing feature. Also, some Internet-ready phones can be used as a fax modem, but you’ll need to purchase the proper data cables to benefit from it.

Always on the go? Look for a phone that has Bluetooth or infrared. Both features allow you to wirelessly connect with external devices. A phone with an infrared port allows info to be exchanged wirelessly with PDAs or PCs.

Besides talk time, the length of standby time is just as important, especially for those who do not carry chargers. A three to seven-hour talk time is not unusual. But find out whether the battery has enough standby time to last at least the whole day.

How to buy a second-hand car?

Search far and wide. Flip through auto magazines and newspaper classifieds for a better idea of what you’re looking for. You can make a search based on your budget, specific make of car or model. You can also ask your mechanic on cars for sale.

Check it out. Test-drive the car to see whether it runs well and look for any physical defects to ensure it’s accident-and defect-free. To really make sure, get your mechanic to do a professional check-up.

Take a look at the service record. You will be able to see first-hand whether the car has been well-maintained and regularly serviced.

Don’t let the seller force you into buying. If you’re not happy with the deal, move on. You’ll surely find something else you like!

Alternatively, buy a car at an auction. However, you won’t be able to do a test drive as the cars are sold on an “as seen” basis.
