Creating a home office space

You need to think about the technical equipment, furniture and storage space. Take it one step at a time!

Storage: Having adequate space for filing;; purposes is essential. Choose furnishings that can perform double-duty jobs like a cabinet armoire that can hold files as well as media equipment. Computers, a fax machine and a scanner are necessities for a home office so focus your budget on them. Check out desks and work centres that allow the computer to be concealed. A roll-top desk is a good idea. Your home office should blend in with your home so storage options should look more like furniture than stark office equipment.

Lighting: Warmth can be quickly added to a workspace with well-placed lighting. An adjustable desktop lamp is a good investment since it reduces the glare from your computer screen. Allow yourself enough natural light, so having windows nearby is a good idea. But remember to make sure that it’s not too sunny and hot though, since that could get uncomfortable.

Decorating: include some of your personality into the decor, yet keep it professional. Working at home needs discipline and if your home office is too comfy you’ll end up not doing any work! The trick is to make it fun, yet maintain certain boundaries to ensure you get into work mode once you enter the room. Try wood panelling or rich wallpaper and hang inspiring artwork or a mirror to reflect the focal point of the room to keep the energy flowing.
