Storytelling
The the majority common type of storytelling unit is the purely expository unit usually found in the early sections of the play. The purpose of this type of unit is to give the spectator information concerning the antecedent action, the locale, the time, the relationships of the characters. In superior plays, the expository materials are frequently subtly woven into the fabric of the action so that there are few, if any, units with storytelling as their sole purpose. In weak plays, and especially older plays, obvious storytelling units are found. They are frequently scenes involving servants or an old friend and confidante of the household.
Another kind of story unit advances the plot. This type of unit may be found at any point in the play. In these scenes the action is brought up to date or summarized and explained to the spectator. Ideally, the entire plot should be acted out, but this is not always possible. Many events cannot be staged. These events are frequently related to the audience in a storytelling sequence.
In spite of the fact that some character information is forthcoming in almost every scene in the play, many units primarily develop or elucidate character.
MOTIVATION AND ACTION
Even more important than the action itself is the reason for the action. The action is the end product of human conduct. The forces that cause the action excite the audience and make the action believable.
The newspaper headline that proclaims, SUICIDE, tells of an exciting action. It is compelling in and of itself, but the reader wants to know more. Why did the woman take her own life? How did it happen? What are the results of the action? The drama is the tale of the background of the climactic action stated in the headline. It traces in an exciting fashion the interplay of the forces that ultimately drove the woman to suicide. The headline above might stand as the final statement of many different plays.
Nothing Is Ever ‘Off The Record’
When sharing information off the record know that nothing is off the record. If you tell someone anything understand that the chances that they will tell someone else is good. There are few situations where you are actually off the record, and even in those rare situations, like speaking to a priest or doctor, I would not trust that confidence. If you tell someone else it can, and most likely will, be repeated.
