Open fit heаring аid technology is а fаirly recent development thаt is proving to be very populаr with certаin types of heаring аid users.

Open fit heаring аids hаve been specificаlly designed to provide а discreet аnd nаturаl sounding solution for people with moderаte аnd pаrticulаrly with high frequency heаring loss (а lаck of clаrity rаther thаn volume).

Speаker-in-the-eаr heаring аids (аlso known аs а receiver-in-the-eаr heаring аid, or RITE) аre extremely lightweight аnd аre essentiаlly invisible heаring аids, just like stаndаrd open fit heаring аids. They consist of а smаll plаstic cаsing thаt sits on top of аnd behind the weаrer’s eаr аnd thаt houses аll of the electronic components of the heаring аid (except for the speаker). а thin cleаr tube is аttаched to this cаse, through which very thin wires аre run to аttаch to the speаker, which is locаted in the end of the tube. From this sound tube, there is а retention line thаt rests in the bottom of the bowl of the user’s outer eаr, keeping the heаring аid securely in plаce.

In the open аcoustic style, the output or receiver is contаined in the BTE instrument аnd sound is delivered to the eаr through а thin tube. Some stаndаrd BTE heаring аids cаn be modifiied to the open аcoustic style аlthough most fittings use smаll BTEs designed to be used only аs open fits. Open аcoustic fittings аre most аppropriаte for people with normаl or neаr normаl heаring in the low pitches аnd а mild to moderаte heаring loss in the high tones. Exаmples include the Widex m series, Phonаk Certenа аnd Versаtа, Oticon Hit, аnd Stаrkey OTE.

Open-Fit heаring аids аre smаll units thаt fit behind the eаr. а smаll tube аbout 1 mm in diаmeter goes from the heаring аid into the eаr cаnаl. These tubes, which come in vаrious lengths, аre meаsured in two dimensions. The first dimension is the length from the top of the eаr to the bend where it enters the eаr cаnаl. The second dimension is the length of the tube thаt extends into the eаr cаnаl from the bend in the tube. аs the size of the tube increаses (i.e., from а 1 to 4), both dimensions get longer.

а speаker-in-the-eаr heаring аid cаn offer the benefits of open fit heаring аids to people with moderаte to severe heаring loss. These lightweight, neаrly invisible heаring аids cаn be used with or without аn eаrmold аnd cаn provide superior results. Those who were previously told they could not use open fit heаring аids should investigаte this new option, cаrefully choosing the vendor with which they will work.

Who said as improving living conditions rhymes with better health? We discover, on Bloomberg, that science plays a dirty trick to India: while 400 million Indians join the middle class, the country has an average annual growth of 7%, that the conditions of life ‘s improve, Indian society is increasingly affected by diabetes. Ironically, generations of poverty, malnutrition and heavy physical work are that Indians are ill prepared to sedentary lifestyles and diets rich.

Result: a million Hindus are expected to succumb to diabetes this year, according to the International Diabetes Federation. With 50 million cases, India is among the countries most affected by this disease.

Everything begins even before birth: the undernourished mothers give birth to small babies and malnourished, whose metabolism is equipped to deprivation, but not for abundance.

In urban India, diabetes type 2 targeted 3-4% of adults in mid-1980. Today, it affects between 11 and 12%.

And diabetes does not increase: it also affects Indians earlier. They suffer at 42.5 years on average, a decade before the Europeans. Diabetes affects so a population of employees, and parents for their premiums. Consequence: the disease is very expensive in the country. According to a 2007 estimate of the Economist Intelligence Unit, it lost 2.1% to annual growth of gross domestic product of India.

Asked by Marketplace, Jason Gale, author of the article cites a study by the World Bank according to which “if India eliminated all non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and heart problems, its economy would be 4 to 10% more important. ”

The disease jeopardizes the Indian growth. “If you look at countries like India, who can not vaccinate all their children, one wonders how they will fight an epidemic of a noncommunicable disease, said Mark Hanson, president of the International Society for Developmental Origins of Health and Disease. It is as great a threat as global warming. It will ruin the world economy in the next 20 to 30 years.

Construction began this summer at the site of the Glen. In developing the design and architecture of the new hospital, University Health Centre (MUHC) constantly takes the pulse of nurses and other health professionals with working groups. A process that takes place so atypical for a public-private partnership.

Care units, which will be built at the Glen site, will not take the form that was included in initial plans. They are triangular rather than rectangular, in order to improve its functioning. As modern new hospital will consist of singles, this geometry was adopted in response to suggestions from health workers, who wished to obtain a better vision on all patients and reduced distances to cross a room another. “We must create an environment, a form of unity, which facilitates the work of people,” said Imma Franco, Assistant Director Planning MUHC. It facilitates visibility, patient safety, infection control, etc.. All this has been taken into consideration. Then, the form became triangular, rather than 12 beds [aligned so] linear. It brings all the features. ”

Nearly 90 groups are active

It is one of many examples of changes that were made to projects after exchanges between architects and nurses in the working groups set up by the MUHC. Nearly 90 groups are currently working on the development of various departments under construction in this project which will bring together in one campus, the Montreal Children’s, Montreal Chest Institute and Royal Victoria Hospital .

“They are head nurses, doctors, secretaries, orderlies, logistics people and all people involved in these sectors who are working on [daily], who help us in planning and help architects to develop the concept that it meets the functionality that is described in our documents. It is to take what is written in the functional and technical program, a job description in words, figures, diagrams, and translate it into plans. ”

Imma Franco admits that “sometimes, its just the right plan to change. Of course we will not change the form of care units in a year. It is important to do at the beginning, because they, the people in construction, they begin. The form is planted. “For cons, the working groups continue their work in parallel, discussing different notions of physical places” until June 2011, “said Imma Franco. “Over you go, unless major changes we will see. They are more interior walls that change. ”

Because the work environment also involves workshops. Indeed, patient rooms are designed around the needs identified by the hospital staff. Thus, the rooms of 25 square meters will consist of three zones: one for work and professional nurses, one for the patient and one for family or visitors. “The professionals were instrumental in the development of these zones so that it truly responds to the way they work.” She stressed that the consultations have determined what areas should be installed in computers and materials that nurses use . “All this has really been improved with their involvement,” says Imma Franco.

She also noted that some of their recommendations to adapt the project to the needs of patients, they witness in their daily work. “At first [the plans], we had the bathroom which faced the bed. Now she is on the same side as the head of the bed so the patient can more easily move from bed to the bathroom [and] avoiding falls, taking it as an example.

A method a typical for PPP

Consultation with the hospital staff is a proven formula already in the design of new hospitals in North America. But few projects have pushed the process as far as the MUHC. “In the field of hospital construction, it is at the very beginning, but not [with] as much consultation that makes the MUHC. This is quite new, for a PPP hospital to have so many consultations with professionals. When you look at other projects that are under a PPP, there was no much consultation. ”

Yet according Imma Franco, this step should not be retracted. “A wider consultation is something very important for a teaching hospital like the MUHC, because a hospital is so varied in terms of activities,” she believes, noting that the standards vary greatly from one department to another. “There are a number of partners within an academic medical center whose advice must be taken into account,” said Imma Franco, who ensures that the work sessions do not slow the construction of the hospital, since the deadlines have been provided to make way for this process.

“It’s true that I shake [the nurses and doctors] that they come to meetings without many delays. For them, it’s a lot of work, because they already have their own [work]. We, on the side of planning, we ask them to come to the workshops of a half-day or full day, “admits the assistant director for planning, certifying, by cons, that nurses appreciates being consulted.

“They are very happy. They want to participate. It’s something they want. I get calls every day to tell me that this person wants to participate. So it is something that is eagerly awaited from them. It’s a challenge nonetheless. Because the more we consult, the more one has different opinions. Sometimes it becomes a challenge to get everyone to a consensus. But I think it is a challenge that is important, and the result will be better. “

Patient’s rights

1. You have the right to be called by your surname. If you are called by your first name, you have the right to call the doctor by his—it keeps the relationship on even ground.

2. You have the right to be interviewed with your clothes on. You should not have to give your history and symptoms while you’re in stirrups or sitting on an examining table, wrapped in nothing but paper.

3. You have the right to be notified of all test results-abnormal and normal-in a timely fashion. Some doctors will choose to mail you a note, others will call you or even ask you to come back. But you shouldn’t have to chase down your M.D. or the report.

4. You have the right to your 15 minutes with the doctor. That means—barring an emergency—there are no interruptions, no phone calls, no extraneous people walking into the room.

5. You have the right to be seen within a half hour of your appointment. Making you wait for an hour or more is unconscionable—it sends the message that the doctors time is more valuable than yours. If your physician is delayed, there should be an apology and an explanation—or I believe you should not have to pay the bill.

But a patient can’t expect these courtesies without being part of the team. Here’s your part of the bargain:

Doctor’s rights

1. Your doctor has the right to know the truth about your habits. Admit to the alcohol and cigarettes. Tell him about the herbal medications and over-the-counter products you are taking. They can affect treatment.

2. Your doctor has the right to know if you’re confused. Ask questions.

And if you feel uncertain about a diagnosis or treatment, ask for a second opinion.

A good doctor won’t mind.

3. Your doctor has the right to know if you aren’t going to follow his advice. Just say so. It is frustrating, even dangerous, for a physician to believe that you’re going along with a certain regimen when you’re not.

4. Your doctor has the right to expect you to be on time. If you’re running late, call the office. Nothing irritates an M.D. more than waiting for the 5:00 p.m. patient only to have her arrive at 6:00—or not at all.

5. Your doctor has the right to see only the patient who made the appointment. Don’t bring another family member for a quick checkup. The choreography of our day is complicated; throwing in an extra exam may seem like a shortcut to you, but it can derail an entire office schedule.

Approximately eighty percent of young adults are experiencing acne dilemma. Acne is just a short-lived problem. However, the scars that acne left could be carried all through out their lives if not treated immediately. People say that acne scars cannot be deleted. But that is not true. There is a hope for acne scars nowadays. Examples are the collagen injection, laser treatments and using your own fats to cover up scars.

Before going into details of all these treatments, let’s try to look into the causes of acne scars to be able to know why a scar is left behind when the acne heals. Generally, the reason why there are scars after wound are healed is because of the damaged tissue. If there is a damaged tissue, the body tries to heal the wound to protect it from further infections. In cases like acne, skin pores are covered with excess oil or dead skin hindering the secretion of the natural oils. It will create a perfect place for bacteria to stay that will irritate the skin layers and will soon lead to acne. First symptoms of acne are itchiness that’s why we tend to rub or pick it. Such action will irritate the sensitive skin tissues that will oftentimes result to wounds or aggravated acne. Thus, when it heals the scar will be left behind.

Now, one of the most popular and used acne scar treatment is the injection of collagen under the surface or layer of the scarred skin. Collagen will not create any chemical reaction to erase the scar rather it will make the scarred skin even and makes it unnoticeable. This kind of treatment doesn’t need to be done repeatedly since collagen cannot be absorbed by the body.

Another technique for acne scar treatment is the use of laser devices to erase scars. These techniques are very effective but a specialist is needed to facilitate the operation. In cases like there are deep scars to be treated, skin grafting or even a skin surgery will be considered. The operation is also expensive but the effect is very rewarding.

There is another technique wherein a fat from your body will be transferred by injecting it under the scarred skin. This process is called autologous fat transfer. This is a good technique since there are no chemical reactions in the body. However, it needs to be done repeatedly because fats can be absorbed into the body. If that happens, the scar will be seen again.

These three acne scar treatments are just a few of the many techniques in treating acne scars. Nowadays, scar is never a problem. And there is a hope for acne scars. Yet the best way to get rid of them is to avoid them. Keep your face and body clean all the time.

It is normal to shed hair every day and the truth is we loose between 100-125 hairs on any given day. Hair that is shed falls out at the end of growth cycle. At any given time 10% of our hair is in what is called a “resting phase” and after 2-3 months resting, hair falls out and new hair grows in its place. Some people, however, experience more hair loss than is normal.

As we get older, both men and women experience some hair loss. It’s a normal part of the aging process. Called Androgenetic Alopecia, it accounts for 95% of all hair loss. Which is why most people should consider using something like Provillus. Androgentic Alopecia often runs in families and affects some people more than others. In men it is often referred to as Male Pattern Baldness.

It is characterized by a receding hair line and baldness on the top of head. Women, on the other hand, don’t go entirely bald even if their hair loss is severe. Instead, hair loss is spread out evenly over their entire scalp.

Hormones play the dominant role when talking about Androgenetic Alopecia. Simple put, both men and women produce testosterone. Testosterone can be converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) with the aid of the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase. DHT shrinks hair follicles causing the membranes in the scalp to thicken, become inelastic and restrict blood flow. This causes the hair follicles to atrophy. As a result, when a hair does fall out, it is not replaced unless you are using something like Provillus.

Needless to say, men produce more testosterone than women and experience more hair loss.

While Androgenetic Alopecia is the number one reason why individuals experience hair loss, it is not the only one. Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, ringworm and fungal infections can cause hair loss. Certain medications such as blood thinners, gout medication, birth control pills and too much vitamin A can cause sudden or abnormal hair loss as can following a crash diet, sudden hormonal changes, chemotherapy and radiation.

Emotional stress, pregnancy, or surgery can also cause our hair to fall out and is usually not noticed until 3-4 months after the stressful event has taken place. Stress can cause a slowing of new hair growth because a larger number of hair follicles enter into the resting phase and no new hair growth is experienced.

Another way in which individuals experience hair loss is due to mechanical stressors on the hair and scalp. Wearing pigtails, cornrows or tight rollers that end up pulling on the hair can scar the scalp and cause permanent hair loss. Hair products such as hot oil treatments and chemicals used for permanents can cause inflammation to the hair follicles which can also result in scarring and hair loss.

Motion sickness is a condition that occurs in some people when boating, flying or driving. It is estimated that as many as 80 percent of the population has experienced motion sickness at some time. Most people suffer only mild to moderate symptoms. For example, they may have a feeling of uneasiness or a slight headache in mild cases whereas they may experience nausea, dizziness, sweating, vomiting, disorientation and an inability to function in stronger cases. The motion of a boat on the ocean often causes the most severe symptoms. Natural therapies and valuable self-care techniques go a long way in controlling and even eliminating symptoms of motion sickness.

Motion sickness often begins in the inner ear, which is responsible for the body’s sense of balance. Projecting upward and posteriorly from the vestibule in each ear are three rings called semicircular canals that are filled with fluid. When your head and body move in an atypical manner, the fluid inside these canals moves in patterns that are not typical of our normal “feet on the ground” sense. When your head experiences constant, pronounced movement, this fluid stimulates the nerve fibers that monitor balance, causing dizziness, nausea, sweating and vomiting.

Vision also plays an important part in causing the symptoms of motion sickness. A changing view of the normally constant horizon and other visual reference points aggravates the inner ear.

Anxiety is the third mechanism that contributes to motion sickness. For some individuals, the fears of flying or claustrophobia exacerbate symptoms. Anxiety based on previous attacks also worsens symptoms, which then follow the prior course: head motion, visual stimulation and anxiety.

Conventional Treatment

The most common conventional treatment is dimenhydrinate, also known as Dramamine, which comes in tablet form. Dimenhydrinate affects the central nervous system by causing drowsiness. These drugs reduce histamine and acetylcholine levels in the blood.

Meclizine hydrochloride, also known as Bonine, is a popular antihistamine used for motion sickness. Some people may need medication to stop motion sickness, especially if they are on the ocean. Motion sickness from flying and driving, however, can often be handled without drugs.

Natural Treatments

By discovering which of the three mechanisms (head motion, visual stimulation or anxiety) exacerbates your symptoms the most, you can gain control over the intensity of motion sickness. Keep in mind that reducing anxiety is an important step in preventing and controlling motion sickness. Therefore, any methods that control stress in your life are helpful. Deep breathing, meditation and prayer all calm the nervous system. The following natural remedies can help with motion sickness:

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is the best researched and most effective herbal medicine for motion sickness. In Germany, ginger is a licensed over-the-counter medication that is sold under the label “Dyspepsia; prevention of motion sickness.” Ginger combats motion sickness by inhibiting cholinergic and histamine activity that is produced by an over stimulated inner ear. Traditional herbal beliefs hold that ginger warms and calms the stomach and gastrointestinal tract while also helping to ground and center the body. The body then isn’t affected by changes in the environment.

Ginger root is classified as an aromatic bitter that stimulates digestion, improves secretion of bile from the liver and gallbladder and protects stomach irritation from non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen. Ginger also has a sedative effect on the nervous system, which explains its value in treating motion sickness.

Dosage is based on body weight and severity of symptoms. Mild cases may benefit from 500 mg of the root; however, the recommended dosage is 1,000 mg taken 20 to 25 minutes before flying and repeated every two hours. Tablets and capsules generally work best and are convenient on trips. Take 2 to 6 capsules three hours before traveling. You can also make ginger tea by boiling 1 to 4 ounces of chopped ginger root. Experiment with dosages to find one that works for you. Ginger is a safe herb: If a lower dose is not effective, try a dose three times the normal amount. There are alcohol tinctures and liquid extracts in a glycerin base that are quite palatable and are absorbed through the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat. Take 15 to 60 drops depending on severity of symptoms. Ginger ale may help on occasion, but when taken alone, the dosage is too small for anything but the mildest of symptoms.

Other effective plant medicines include chamomile, passiflora and hops, taken together or separately. You can find combination formulas at most health food stores. Take 2 to 4 tablets. These herbs help reduce tension. Some people get a feeling of relaxation from alcohol-free beer, which is made from hops.

Multivitamins with 15 mg of B1, B2, B3 and 50 mg of B6 are helpful in calming the nervous system as long as they don’t bother your stomach.

Calcium also has a relaxing effect on the nerves; take 500 mg 20 minutes before flying.

Natural antihistamines (bioflavonoids) such as quercetin and bromelain are effective in doses of 250 to 500 mg, which can be doubled or tripled if needed. Take the bioflavonoids two-and-a-half hours before flying and repeat every two hours. Histamine-type reactions will decrease with a good diet that includes essential fatty acids, such as borage and evening primrose oils. Take two 500-mg capsules.

Homeopathic combination remedies for motion sickness include Cocculus, Petroleum, Ipecac and Nux vomica. Take 4 pellets (6x or 12x) every two hours, starting before the trip. You also can take these medicines individually if their indications match your symptoms.

Scientific research suggests that acupressure applied to the wrist point “pericardium 6″ relieves nausea. To stimulate this point, place your thumb in the middle of your wrist between the two forearm bones, two finger widths above the wrist crease. Wristbands that stimulate this point also are available. Another pressure point is located on your neck below your ear and right behind your jaw. “Large intestine 4″ is in the middle of the muscle between your thumb and index finger. This is used for stress and gastrointestinal distress. A fourth pressure point is located between your eyebrows. Holding and pinching the skin there can reduce a headache and center your eyes and their focus. An instructional book on acupressure points is a worthwhile investment.

A holistic approach to motion sickness includes an evaluation of your stress and anxiety levels. Claustrophobia and fear of flying increase the likelihood that visual and balance changes will stimulate motion sickness. Relaxation through breathing exercises or meditation helps calm and gives plenty of oxygen to your nervous system. Get plenty of fresh air, and if you are driving, take breaks. Also, don’t read while the vehicle is in motion—instead, listen to music and rest your eyes.

Musculoskeletal irritation of the neck aggravates motion sickness. Massage and spinal manipulation before a trip greatly reduce stress and can help prevent symptoms.

It is important to drink lots of water when you have motion sickness. The level of hydration in the body and inner ear can affect balance and worsen symptoms. Avoid diuretics such as coffee and alcohol, which stimulate urination and increase dehydration. In addition, don’t smoke, and eat a small meal of complex carbohydrates that you can digest well. Oatmeal, applesauce and yogurt are great foods for traveling. Sucking on a lemon or sipping ginger ale can help as well.

Try these methods to discover what works best for you, and be persistent. Learning about your body’s needs and rhythms is a skill that will help you with any health condition you experience.

Cholesterol is a material that is derived from animal fats in food and that is also produced by the body. A certain amount of cholesterol is essential to health-it forms two per cent of the weight of the brain, for example—but too much cholesterol builds up in the arteries and may play a part in causing coronary disease or stroke. Most doctors advice moderating the animal fat content of our diet as a wise precaution. And this applies to lean men as well as plump ones.

Cholesterol-rich foods include fat meats, pork, sausages, egg yolk, butter, cheese, pastry, cream, meat drippings, and other animal fats. So it is wise to avoid too many of these foods and to trim away the visible fat from your meat. Since eating vegetable fats will actually reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood, try to include in your diet some vegetable oils (such as corn, sunflower, and olive oil), fish oils, or polyunsaturated margarines.

While a certain amount of fat is essential for any man’s health, two foods should definitely be cut right down for a man who wants to slim. These are sugar and alcohol. Sugar supplies nothing but energy, and when it is not used for energy, it is laid down as fat. What’s more, some doctors are convinced that there is a link between high sugar consumption and heart disease. As for alcohol, this is nearly twice as fattening, weight for weight, as sugar. And it has the double disadvantage of stimulating appetite. Ideally, alcohol should be out for a man who is slimming. If that seems impossible, you might decide to try and cut out more calories from other foods to compensate for the occasional drink. But it is not wise to do this regularly lest a man go short of some important food element in the process— quite apart from feeling hungrier and weakening in his resolve to diet.

Any diet should, of course, be combined with regular exercise. For, although exercise alone cannot reduce excess weight—it would take a 35-mile walk or 100 holes of golf to get rid of just one pound of fat—exercise is just as important as diet in weight control. Only when eating and exercise go hand in hand can a man reach a desirable weight and stay there.

Exercise is not just important for the dieter. It is vital for any man’s health, be he fat or lean. Exercise can make a man look, think, sleep, and feel better. It can help release pent-up tension and stress, prevent aches and pains, improve his circulation, and keep his heart and lungs in good shape.

The key to safe and effective exercise is to introduce a little bit of action into every day. Sudden bouts of strenuous exercise can be dangerous because the body just isn’t prepared for the strain. A man who leads a sedentary life needs an activity that starts out gently but can become gradually more demanding as he gets fitter. And it needs to be something he can fit into his daily routine.

One of the best and easiest forms of exercise that will fit into anyone’s daily routine is walking. Maybe you could persuade someone to walk to work or the station. It will probably help if you can walk along part of the way with him or her. Walk before bed— this will also help you sleep better. And exercise after meals is particularly good, because more food is burned up faster just after eating.

Swimming, running, skating, skiing, tennis, squash, table tennis, or bicycling are all excellent activities to reduce cholesterol.

Prevention is the finest way to fight any disease. By regular workout, we will be able to lower cholesterol in our body. A regular medical checkup and making some lifestyle changes may reduce bad cholesterol in our body.

I was diagnosed with diverticulitis almost 30 years ago, and I’ve also been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and short bowel syndrome. I’ve done research, but everything I’ve found stresses the need to have a high-fibre intake. I’ve had to drastically reduce my fiber intake on medical advice because of constant diarrhoea.

answer:
Diet plays a major part in the management of diverticular disease. When you have a flare-up, you will be advised to reduce fibre for a month or so, but once symptoms settle down, it is advisable to gradually resume a high-fibre diet. New thinking suggests that changes in the balance of bacteria in the bowel might contribute to chronic low-grade inflammation, and this is almost certainly the case after a lot of antibiotics. Treatment with therapeutic probiotics is the latest direction in preventing recurrence of diverticulitis. Probiotics are also being used to treat irritable bowel syndrome.

What is the difference between nuclear cataracts and cortical cataracts?

answer:
A cataract is a clouding or opacity of the lens in your eye, which is normally clear. It comes from the Latin word cataracta, meaning waterfall, because having a cataract has been likened to looking through a sheet of water. It is considered a common, if not normal, part of aging. As cataracts progress, they can cause blurred vision, sensitivity to glare, increased nearsightedness and distorted vision. The terms “nuclear” and “cortical” cataract refer to the position of the cataract on the lens. The nuclear cataract occurs in the center of the lens, while the cortical cataract starts as wedge-shaped spokes around the periphery of the lens. Higher risk groups for cataracts include people with diabetes, people who have taken corticosteroids over a prolonged period, heavy drinkers, those over-exposed to the sun and smokers.
